- domains, HTML files & images
A Many search engines now give extra
relevance to sites where keywords being searched upon are contained
in the address (or URL) of the website. This highlights the importance
of choosing your domain name carefully. It is also best to have
your own domain name, as some search engines today can penalise
your ranking if it’s on a large, free host provider (like
www.mybigISP.com/clients/myaccount).
It may be wise for you to
secure a domain name containing your keywords. For example, a website
at the domain www.buy-macromedia-dreamweaver.com is more likely
to receive a higher ranking than www.mysoftwareshop.com should the
key-phrase ‘buy Macromedia Dreamweaver’ be searched
upon. Note that each word in the domain name should be separated
with dashes (hyphens). This is also the case with the names of your
individual files within your website, including HTML files and all
image file names.
Images in websites can have
keywords placed within their <IMG ALT> HTML attribute that
defines the ‘alternative text’ that displays when a
user doesn’t want images to show in their web browser. This
text also displays when the mouse is placed over an image. Some
search engines will index this ALT text, so most high-ranking sites
include their key-phrases in their ALT tags.
