What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Google, Yahoo, AltaVista, Looksmart, Overture, Inktomi, Anzwers… are names of just some of the search engines, and it is likely that you have heard most of these names before. As a user of the Internet, chances are you regularly use one or more of these search engines to find information online. You are not alone – more than 85% of web users start with a search engine to find what they want. (GVU Users Survey)

Since most web users find sites through search engines, it’s important to have a good ranking on search engines to give your site a chance of being found. In most cases, only the ten most ‘relevant’ matches are displayed on the first page of results and users will normally click through to a site they like in this top ten.

The techniques and processes used to improve rankings are collectively referred to as Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO. It is about developing webpages so they have the best chance of appearing near the top of search engine results for specific keywords or key-phrases. This is an affordable way of boosting traffic and attracting your target market to visit your site for the first time.

SEO is gaining in popularity as more website owners and webmasters are seeing how they can dramatically increase the traffic to their website by engaging accurate and current Search Engine Optimisation strategies for their webpages.
